The Economics Of Buiding A Wind Turbine System

With the problems nowadays in climate change, many people and companies opt the use of renewable energies to power their homes and their businesses. One of the systems being considered is tapping the use of wind or what is known as wind energy. This offers numerous environmental, social and financial benefit. Do not get overly excited though because building your own wind project is no joke. You have to realize that planning up until the maintenance of your wind system involve a very complex process and it is time consuming.

If you are already decided to set-up your own wind turbine system, then you have to know the basics of building it, familiarize yourself with the elements needed and the setbacks. However, you have to define first your project goals. What do you intend to do with your wind turbine system? Do you plan to use it for your own consumption, in your farm and in your house? Do you plan to sell the excess energy that you can sell to the utility company? Or, you want to do both? Your answer to these questions will determine greatly the scope of your planning and the economics of your system.

Once you are clear with your project goals, the next thing you need to do is assess your resources -- the wind existing in your site and your property. You need to know this in order to establish the feasibility of your project including the economics of it. If your site is clear of trees and buildings, the wind is classified as class 3 and there are no high obstructions, then you can positively look forward to your future wind project.

Wind turbine prices including its installation will depend on your needs and a number of factors. Both commercial and small scale wind turbine systems are available in the market. Over-all, the commercial scale is more costly than the small scale but are more pricey per kilowatt of energy-producing capacity. The turbine purchase agreement needs to be executed, along with identifying the type of machine to be used, location of the project and construction contracts.

The components of wind turbine prices include: wind resource assessment and project site analysis; turbine and tower including their freight prices, construction expenses, studies on permitting and interconnection; utility system upgrades, protection, transformers and metering equipment; insurance; warranty, operations, repair and maintenance; and, legal including consultation fees and taxes.

In recent 2007-2008 canvassing, the commercial-scale wind turbine system ranged from $1.2 to $ 2.6 million per MW of installed nameplate capacity. For the 2 MW-in-size commercial-scale turbines installed today, the estimated cost is around $3.5 million. Those small-scale, under 100 KW, wind turbine prices is between $ 3,000 to $ 5,000 per KW capacity. This would mean at least $35,000-$50,000 for a 10 KW machine use to power an average home.

No matter what the cost of your wind project is, always think that the benefits of having one always outweighs the price.
