How Micro Wind Turbines Work And Their Major Advantages

A micro wind turbine is a much smaller version of a wind turbine developed to provide electricity for a single home or a local area. It encompasses a wide variety of applications including AC power, DC direct supply to fluorescent lighting, DC supply for water heating, battery charging of transportations, hybrid ground source heat pump systems and hybrid micro/wind photovoltaic systems. Micro wind turbines are becoming increasingly popular all over the world and have truly proven its efficiency when used along with solar modules to empower living in remote homes off the utility-grid. These very small wind turbines have further given emphasis to the power and competence of wind as a source of energy. These micro wind turbines are gear-like, can be linked to fit, can be placed anywhere appropriate around the house and are very affordable.

Micro wind turbines have existed for quite some time, supplying electricity to sailboats. But, only until recently that these small wind turbines have gained mass popularity because of the need for electricity in most remote areas. The concept behind these very small wind turbines is simple. The wind drives the blades that are attached to a hob, and then the blades start to rotate. These blades are linked to a shaft and spin the turbine. There are two types of micro wind turbines currently available, namely, the roof mounted and the mast mounted. The basic difference is implied on the how they are mounted. The roof mounted micro wind turbines are designed to be placed at the roof of a house and can produce up to two kilowatts of electricity, whereas the mast mounted micro wind turbines are stand alone and can generate up to sixty kilowatts of electricity. Furthermore, the micro wind turbines can have either a horizontal- axis turbine or a vertical-axis turbine. Horizontal-axis turbines are designed specifically for devices like tail fins to steer the blades towards the direction of the wind. On the other hand, vertical-axis wind turbines are definitely more visually appealing and lower wind direction and noise issues, but compromise efficiency. As a fundamental rule, micro wind turbines like other wind turbines are not recommended to be used in highly urbanized areas primarily because of lower wind blowing in these areas and the operations can aggravate the existing noise. In addition, the immense consideration of several visibility factors renders wind turbines to be unpleasant.

Micro wind turbines have two great advantages to electricity consumers. First, having your own micro turbines can save you a huge amount of money because these small wind turbines can generate a good amount of electricity sufficient enough to power several of your frequently used appliances. It is a good way of eliminating a considerable percentage of your monthly electricity bill and can gradually turn your savings into a small and worthwhile investment on micro wind turbines. Secondly, this type of wind turbines is environment friendly and advocates a greener Earth. Using these small wind turbines can greatly reduce your contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, thereby minimizing the overall negative impacts of using electricity and polluting the environment.
